At the height of the space race the US and the Soviets were both desperate to be the first to land a man on the moon. To be able to do this they needed critical information about the effect of space travel on astronauts, and this needed to be collected by the astronauts themselves during space flights. There was one problem. In the absence of gravity, ink in pens will not flow. The US spent millions of dollars commissioning a pen manufacturer to design and create a special pen that would pump the ink, much as a heart pumps blood.The Soviets used pencils |
