John was happy at university. Trevor, his main lecturer made every lesson interesting, and John’s results had steadily improved. What’s more, he looked forward to the lectures and even the work he needed to do on his own.
One day Trevor was ill, so another man, Ralph, delivered the teaching. Ralph seemed very angry with the students, and was scathing about their achievements.
John thought about this for a few days then, when Trevor returned he decided to ask about it. “Why was Ralph so angry with us all?” he asked.
Trevor smiled. “Ralph, like many people, believes that learning has to be difficult and hard work. He can’t understand why my students get such good results when he sees them having fun and taking things easy.”
John went away thoughtfully. He wondered how many other things that most people believed weren’t true.
